About us

The Environmental Protection Department under the Ministry of Environment operates in the following areas while implementing state policy, seeking to ensure legality and law and order in the field of environmental protection and the use of natural resources, within its competence:

1. Performs state control over environmental protection:
   •  oversees compliance by natural and legal persons with the requirements set out in the Law on Environmental Protection of the Republic of Lithuania and other legislation regulating environmental protection in the areas of: pollution prevention, waste (except radioactive) management, accounting and sanitary protection of raw wood, performance of obligations of producers/importers, operators placing wood and wood products on the market, use of chemical substances and deliberate release of genetically modified organisms into the environment for purposes other than placing on the market, control of the contained use of genetically modified microorganisms, landscape, forests, and biodiversity protection;
   •  carries out monitoring of dangerous objects in cases provided for by legislation;
   •  controls whether environmental taxes are calculated and declared correctly.
2. Provides administrative and other services.
3. Examines applications, complaints, or reports of individuals within the scope of its competence.
4. Consults and provides methodological assistance to natural and legal persons.
5. Organizes the work of non-staff environmental protection inspectors (volunteers), analyses the results of their activities.
6. Organizes a hunting exam and grants the right to hunt.
7. Carries out preventive activities aimed at ensuring that natural and legal persons comply with the requirements of laws and other legislation regulating environmental protection and the use of natural resources.
